Steve Wheeler

Steve Wheeler was a proud member of the Southwood High School Class of 1986. Those who grew up alongside him remembered an easygoing, good-hearted friend: the kind of man who was quick to lend a hand, and who left an impression that lasted long after the years had carried everyone off in their own directions.

His longtime friend Charlotte Blount Teer remembered Steve as someone who always showed up when it counted. He helped her move, took her to the Fort Worth Stockyards for the very first time, and shared long afternoons fishing by her side — the kind of small, generous moments that stay with us for a lifetime.

Steve faced a battle with cancer, and passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023. In keeping with his wishes, his family chose to donate his body to science — a final act of generosity in the spirit of the way he had lived. He is survived by his daughter, along with the many friends and classmates who hold him dear.

When word of his passing reached the Southwood community, it was met with an outpouring of love. Charlotte Blount Teer and Stuart Lee Tutt shared the news with their fellow Cowboys, and classmates from near and far — many who hadn't seen Steve since their days at Southwood — paused to remember him and to lift up his family in prayer. Another Cowboy has ridden off into the sunset. Steve Wheeler is deeply missed, and he will always be a part of the SHS Class of 1986.
